Yes. You drive in China on the licence you already have. The one extra step is a temporary Chinese driving permit, issued against your licence after you land. There is no driving test and no medical exam. In Beijing or Shanghai it takes about 30 minutes at the traffic police office at the airport, with a few documents. Citizens of 40+ countries can currently enter China visa-free for up to 30 days — you may not need a visa at all. Policies change, so check your eligibility before booking. If you do need a visa, the process is straightforward — we recommend applying about a month before your trip. This is what a lot of China actually looks like. This is how many Chinese people really live — normal small towns, local life, beautiful countryside. So much of what we see online focuses only on major cities. Without a car, it’s hard to reach places like this. If you only take high-speed rail or flights between Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, and Chengdu, you’ll never discover these hidden villages.
The drives were smooth thanks to the fabulous infrastructure in China. We were really impressed by how the country carved tunnels and roads through these beautiful mountains. The roads weren’t always plain sailing — there were a few road slides and bumps along the way — but seriously, nothing to complain about.
There’s just an unlimited amount of seriously beautiful nature here — tons of hikes, endless different things you can do. You can basically go off and get lost anywhere you want.
Our first stop on our Western Sichuan road trip wasn’t even on our list — we came because it was on the way. Wow, what a hidden gem… It’s mystical. The mountains are shrouded in mist, there are temples everywhere. It reminds me of the stereotypical image people imagine when they think of China — ancient, atmospheric, and incredibly beautiful.
